Duties and Responsibilities of the Clerk/Register
The duties of the County Clerk are prescribed by State Statute and include: Clerk of the Board of Commissioners, Clerk of the County Canvassers, Clerk of the Board of Election Commissioners, Clerk of the Jury Board, Clerk of the Gun Board, Clerk of the Plat Board, Chief Election Officer for the County, and Register of Vital Statistics.
The County Clerk is also the "keeper" of the Circuit Court seal and Circuit Court files. Felony criminal cases that are bound over from District Court, personal protection orders, and civil cases over $25,000 are filed in the Circuit Court Clerk's Office.
State Statute also prescribes the duties of the Register of Deeds. The Register is responsible for receiving, recording and digital storage of all legal documents affecting real estate within Eaton County.
