How to Apply For a Marriage License

Directions to the Courthouse
At least one of the applicants must apply in person and provide a birth certificate and copy of the driver’s license for the absent applicant. Required information is on the following page.
The fee is $20 for Eaton County residents, $30 for out-of-state applicants, payable at the time of application. Out of State applicants must call our office for application packet.
Please provide the City and State you were born, your parent’s full names including your mother’s maiden name. We will also need to know the State your parents were born in.
A person may be married at the age of 16 or 17 with parental or guardian consent (parent of guardian must be present to sign consent form). Those 18 or over do not require consent.
Proof of age is required in the form of birth certificate, driver’s license, or state ID for both applicants. You will also need to provide your Social Security Number.
Michigan residents must apply in the county in which at least one of the applicants resides. The license then may be used anywhere in Michigan. Out of State applicants must apply in the county where the ceremony will be performed.
Picking up your license
License may be picked up at the County Clerk’s office 4 days after your application by the couple or a third party. This includes the day you apply.
License is good for 33 days from and including date of application.

Eaton County’s Magistrate performs marriages at the Courthouse during working hours. Please check with that office to schedule a time for your ceremony.
Any judge or magistrate in the State of Michigan can perform wedding ceremonies, however, they may require counseling prior to performing the ceremony. To obtain information on judges and magistrates in other Michigan counties, contact the County Clerk for a specific county.
