 Genealogy Information

Genealogy is the study of ancestors. At the County Clerk’s office one can research his/her family history or family ties through birth, marriage, and death records.

Research Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Identification requirements: Driver’s license or Personal Identification card.
Space allows for four genealogists at one time. Prefer children not attend.
Certified copies, as of April 1, 2004, of birth, death or marriage certificates are:  $12.00 and $5.00 for additional copies of the same record.
The Genealogy Room/Historical Room, which is located in the Old Courthouse downtown Charlotte, has copies of Eaton County marriage (1838-1924) and death (1867-1954) indexes on microfilm.  Phone # 517-543-8792.

Searches

Birth Records date back from 1867 to present.
Anyone may obtain a copy of a birth record more than 110 years old.
If the desired record is less than 110 years old and the individual is deceased, an heir may obtain it by providing a copy of the death certificate.
Birth indexes are not open to the public. Staff will assist in birth record searches as time permits.

Death Records – 1867 to present
Anyone can purchase a death certificate.

Marriage Records – 1838 to present
Anyone can purchase a copy of a marriage certificate.

Adoptions

Adoptions that took place in Eaton County can be found by contacting the Juvenile Court Office, 822 Courthouse Dr., Charlotte MI 48813, 517-543-6003.  If a person was adopted in another county you would have to contact that county.

Naturalization/Citizenship Records 1836-1959

The State Archives of Michigan has the naturalization/citizenship records of Eaton County for the years 1836-1959.  We do maintain an index for these records in the Clerk’s Office.  After 1959 these records were filed through the Federal Government.
