Department History
Local and county leaders organized the Eaton County Parks and Recreation Department
in 1970 following several years of study. Olivet College, the Eaton County Farm Bureau,
and the Michigan State University Cooperative Extension Service sponsored community
resource development seminars in 1967, 1968, and 1969. Out of these studies came a recommendation to organize a County Parks and Recreation Department. A commission
of ten members, appointed by the Eaton county Board of Commissioners ( then called
Board of District Supervisors) was created under Public Act 261 of the Public Acts of 1965
State of Michigan as amended.
