“Hands-up to Help Out!”

Public Service Announcement from Local Law Enforcement Leaders

On Saturday, December 10th, from 10 A.M. - 2 P.M. join your local law enforcement leaders at one of the stores listed below to help fill a cop car with non-perishables, unused baby items or with a monetary donation for the victims of domestic violence and homeless in Eaton County. All items collected will be for local food pantries and the SIREN/Eaton Shelter, which helps to provide temporary shelter to victims of domestic violence, basic needs assistance for the homeless, and parenting services.

Two members of the local SIREN/Eaton Shelter Board of Directors, Eaton County Sheriff Mike Raines and Eaton Rapids Police Chief Paul Malewski have encouraged all local area police chiefs to join them and do their part to help put their “Hands-up to Help Out” too.

Sheriff Mike Raines notes, “During my thirty years as a law enforcement officer in Eaton County, I’ve seen how domestic violence shatters the lives of the innocent. It’s a horrible and senseless crime. Michigan also has one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation, and many have lost their jobs and homes too. If we have the ability to take care of our own and help those less fortunate, it’s important for us to work together to do just that. I hope you’ll take a few minutes of your time to stop by and put your “Hands-up to Help Out” this holiday season.”

Eaton Rapids Police Chief Paul Malewski is asking you to “Approach the car with your cart and some of Eaton County’s Most Wanted Suspects known as “Soup,” “Tuna,” “Canned Meat,” “Cereal,” “Crackers,” “Rice,” and “Pasta.” They will be quickly apprehended and taken into custody. All will be transported to the local food pantry at SIREN/Eaton Shelter.”

Saturday, December 10th, 10 A.M. - 2 P.M., please be sure to stop by one of the following “Hands-up to Help Out!” Locations:

Eaton County Sheriff Mike Raines will be at Carl’s Supermarket in Dimondale.

Other Eaton County Sheriff’s Office representatives will be located at the Kroger Store in Delta Township.

Eaton Rapids Police Chief Paul Malewski will be at the Felpausch Food Center in Eaton Rapids.

Sheriff Mike Raines and Deputy Bruce Yelvington visited with Mrs. Dart’s Kindergarten class and first graders at St. Mary’s School in Charlotte during Safety Week.

The children learned about many new and exciting things they can do to help them stay safe. Some of the items covered by Sheriff Raines and Deputy Yelvington included:

If a child gets lost in the store, ask the cashier or a police officer for help.

It’s best to cross the street with an adult. If an adult is not there to help you cross the street, stop at the curb, look both ways to make sure no cars are coming, and listen to make sure there are no cars you may not see. Be careful when crossing the street, and practice with Mom and Dad or Grandpa and Grandma.

No talking to strangers. Don’t go places with strangers. If a stranger asks you to help them find their puppy, to help them in any other way, or go somewhere with them don’t go. If Mom or Dad wants you to go, they’ll tell you it is okay. If you’re not sure, check with your teacher.

Never go trick-or-treating without your parent. And, don’t eat your candy until Mom or Dad have had a chance to check it over first to try to make sure it’s safe to eat.

Be sure to have a flashlight with you, so cars can see where you are, and don’t forget the road crossing safety tips.

Calling for emergency help means dialing 9-1-1 for police, fire or ambulances. It’s important that you only call when it’s a “real” emergency.

The children then received Junior Deputy Stickers and Safety coloring books to remind them of the important lessons they learned.

“Our kids are getting wiser to safety issues through programs like this. It’s important to start at an early age,” states Sheriff Raines. “As a father of four, I share the same concerns other parents do…I want my children to be safe and to know what to do in case of an emergency. Abuse, abductions, accidents and other incidents involving children are some of the most heart-wrenching cases we handle. During my 30 years of service, I’ve handled my share, and as your Sheriff, if I can do anything to help our kids stay safe, I’ll do just that. I appreciate St. Mary’s teachers for inviting us to participate in this important Safety Week to help our kids, and I’m grateful to Deputy Yelvington for his time and assistance.”

If your school or small group would like Sheriff Raines or a Deputy to speak with your children about safety, please contact the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office at (517) 543-3512 or 372-8217.

ECSD INCORPORATES LAW ENFORCEMENT AGAINST DRUGS PROGRAM

Eaton County Sheriff Mike Raines is pleased to announce that the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office is participating in the Law Enforcement Against Drugs (LEAD) Program. The mission of LEAD is to provide law enforcement with a comprehensive program that helps PARENTS keep their children drug free. The program offers convenient and affordable drug and alcohol tests that produce IMMEDIATE results in the PRIVACY and safety of the home. In the event of a positive indication for drugs or alcohol, the program directs the parents to appropriate community resources without law enforcement intervention.

Single test kits detect the presence of alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine and ecstasy. The four panel tests detect the presence of marijuana, opiates, cocaine and methamphetamine. Each kit is accompanied by literature to provide test administering and result evaluation information as well as the availability of local resources that deal in substance abuse issues.

Test kits can be purchased anonymously from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the front desk at the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office in Charlotte or the Delta sub-station on Administration Drive near the intersection of Canal and Saginaw. Single test kits cost $4.00 each and the four-panel kit costs $12.00 each.

With over 30 years in law enforcement, Sheriff Raines has seen the destruction and despair caused by drug and alcohol abuse. He is excited to join other law enforcement agencies across Michigan in providing this valuable tool to parents.

CORRECTIONS APPRECIATION

Sheriff Raines and Undersheriff McPhail recently gave certificates of appreciation to the staff of the Corrections Division of the Eaton County Sheriff's Office. This included all departments of the Jail: Administrative, Corrections Deputies, Kitchen Staff, Maintenance and Medical Division. The Eaton County Jail passed the Michigan Department of Corrections inspections with a perfect score. In order to achieve this, the jail must be in total compliance with all jail regulations, recommended jail practices and be a well-run facility. The State requires each County to provide documentation of policies and procedures, training, health & safety standards, and fire safety. Each jail receives an on-site inspection.

The Eaton County Jail is the only jail in the State of Michigan to receive this perfect recognition for the last five years. Sheriff Mike Raines says this accomplishment is the result of a very dedicated, hard-working jail staff.

Sheriff’s Mounted Division Support Service-members in Iraq and Little Girl in Need

Modern Day Pony Express at your service!  The Eaton County Sheriff’s Department Mounted Division, along with other Sheriff’s Posse’s across the state, will re-create the dramatic rides of the Pony Express to deliver letters for a very special cause.  On June 11th beginning at 7:30 a.m., the Pony Express will ride for your friend or loved one serving in the U.S. Armed Forces overseas and deliver your special letters to family and friends.  The proceeds from this fundraiser will be donated to help five-year-old Allison Lounds from Chippewa County who has been diagnosed with pneumofibramatosis.

Sheriff Mike Raines says, “Our support for those fighting terrorism at home and abroad is critical.  They need to know America is behind them and just how much we appreciate their efforts and sacrifices for the safety of our Homeland and future generations.  What better way to show them your support, in a very special way and to help a child, all at the same time?”  Letters can also be written to loved ones or friends across the nation.  The U.S. Postal Service will deliver the letters sent to family and friends in the United States after they have been carried by the Pony Express.

The original Pony Express started in April 1860 with a goal to deliver mail over 1,966 miles in less than ten days from Missouri to California.  Before this time, the mail was usually delivered via ship, which took nearly a month to reach its destination.  Based on a relay system, the ad for recruits read:  “Wanted – Young, skinny, wiry fellows, not over 20.  Must be expert riders, and are willing to risk their lives for the job.  Orphans preferred.  Wages $25 a week.”  Riders traveled nearly 100 miles each day and stopped every ten miles to exchange horses.  In less than 19 months, over 650,000 miles were traveled and 34,753 pieces of mail were delivered, and only one mail sack was ever lost.*  Less than two years later, the Pony Express was replaced by the telegraph.

The modern-day Pony Express was re-established in 1962.  This year will be the 44th Annual Pony Express Ride in the State of Michigan.

For the modern-day Pony Express Ride-A-Thon, students from Sunfield and Vermontville Schools in Eaton County wrote letters to their family, friends, military personnel serving overseas and even President Bush.  Donations totaling over $500.00 from local area businesses (Sunfield Spy’s, Good Time Pizza, Shirley’s Chuckwagon Café, Hastings City Bank) has been collected to provide stationery to the students.  Eaton County families and friends are welcomed and encouraged to donate and participate in this program.  Letters may be written on special commemorative stationery and receive a special commemorative Pony Express Stamp.  All requests for letters and donations must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, 2005.

For further information, commemorative stationery to participate in writing to a loved one or to make a donation, please contact Mrs. Karen Hathon, ECSD Mounted Division Secretary at (517) 566-8659 or Sheriff Mike Raines at (517) 543-3512, ext. 426.

Sheriff Raines Salutes National Volunteer Week

Submitted by Undersheriff Fred McPhail
“Volunteerism is critical throughout our communities.  As a Law Enforcement Leader and a Volunteer for more than a decade, “Inspire by Example,” is a perfect theme for this year’s celebration.  I’ve seen the positive results of volunteer efforts in communities throughout Eaton County and the lasting difference they’ve made.”  Sheriff Mike Raines says, “As your Sheriff and a public servant, there are many ways we can help others.  As we show our appreciation for America’s volunteers during National Volunteer Week, this would be a good time to ask ourselves, “What can I do to help make a positive difference in my own community?””
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that America had 64.5 million volunteers sign-up nationwide this past year to help others.  The Eaton County Sheriff’s Department currently has over 50 well-trained, dedicated volunteers who serve on the Sheriff’s Handicap Parking, Mounted Division (Posse), Victim’s Advocate Group, Jail Ministry Program, the new Motorcycle Unit and CERT Trained Volunteers in emergencies.
“When citizens are trained and prepared to assist, not hinder, emergency responders benefit across the board,” says Sheriff Mike Raines. “Citizens serve as our ears and eyes throughout Eaton County.  Alone, we’re limited in what we can do.  But, when we develop and foster positive working relationships with local area businesses and the citizens we serve and protect our public safety and crime prevention efforts are greatly enhanced.  As your Sheriff, I’ve devoting a lot of time and attention to existing volunteer programs and exploring further possibilities for additional enhancements to volunteer services that compliment the efforts of our team of highly-trained, well-equipped, dedicated law enforcement professionals.”
With recent budget cuts made by the State and County Commission, it’s even more important than ever to insure that your public safety remains a top priority of our government.  Sheriff Raines has stayed the course to insure just that.  Forging ahead with improved and enhanced training, qualifications and background checks for volunteers, Sheriff Raines’ style of common sense and innovative leadership, takes on an approach that has allowed Sheriff’s Deputies and Command Staff to concentrate their efforts and expertise in the areas of law enforcement and public safety where they’re needed.
With support from these well-trained volunteers, dispatched by professionals, public safety initiatives, community relations and crime prevention efforts flourish.  At the same time, these volunteers are not intended to replace the services provided by the full-time professional members of the Sheriff’s Department.  Instead, the critical support services they provide under the direction of the Sheriff’s designated liaisons and Command Staff, allow them to help where and when needed at very little or no expense to the citizens.  Sheriff’s Department Volunteers are invaluable members of the Sheriff’s Team.
Sheriff Raines advocates volunteerism by stating, “I’d like to strongly encourage every law-abiding citizen of all ages across Eaton County to consider signing-up to give some time, financial support and/or assistance to a local community organization, even if it’s only for a few hours each year.  Your efforts could make a lasting difference in the quality of life in our communities and in your own neighborhood.  He thanks his Sheriff’s Department Volunteers and others for stepping up to the plate and doing their part to inspire others by example.”

METHAMPHETAMINE AWARENESS MEETING A SUCCESS

Sheriff Raines recently organized and held a meeting with residents from the Vermontville area due to the citizens’ concerns regarding the increase of Meth labs in that area. There were approximately 80 people in attendance. Along with Sheriff Raines, other speakers included Eaton County Judge Thomas Eveland, Eaton County Assistant Prosecutor Kevin Tyrell, Lt. Tim Gill of the Tri-County Metro Narcotics Squad and Michigan State Police Trooper Brody Boucher. Trooper Boucher gave a Power Point presentation illustrating Meth lab indicators and how Methamphetamine is produced. Deputy Don Haga of the Eaton County Sheriff Department was present to field any questions due to his recent investigations of Meth labs in the Vermontville area.

The entire presentation lasted about two hours and informational packets were given to the residents. The handouts indicated the signs of a possible Meth lab along with the symptoms of Meth usage. The speakers then entertained questions from the attendees.

Sheriff Raines would like other areas that are interested in a Meth Awareness Presentation to contact his office. Sheriff Raines stated, “It is well-informed citizens that can assist law enforcement when the citizen is able to recognize the signs that may indicate a possible Meth lab in the area.” Sheriff Raines would like to form partnerships with the local communities to work together and significantly limit the number of Meth labs in Eaton County.
