DOG LICENSING INFORMATION

Licensing Requirements: All citizens in the state of Michigan are required to license their dogs four months or older.  A current rabies vaccination certificate from a licensed Michigan Veterinarian is required in order to license dogs.  There is no reciprocity for out of state dog licenses, however, dog licenses from other Michigan counties are recognized.  We begin selling licenses for the upcoming year on December 1st, and the deadline for a dog license purchase is May 31st. Licenses are only valid for the calendar year (January 1st - Decemeber 31st) and must be renewed annually.

License Fees:

Spayed/neutered dogs       $10.00
Sexed dogs                            $15.00
Late fee (after May 31st)    $30.00
Dog licenses may be purchased in person at the County Treasurer's Office, the Animal Control shelter, and at many of the township offices.  A valid vaccination certificate must be presented at the time of purchase.  The County Treasurer's Office is open Monday - Friday (except holidays) from 8:00am - 5:00pm and is located at 1045 Independence Blvd. in Charlotte, Michigan. The Eaton County Animal Control shelter is open Monday-Friday (except holidays) from 9:00 a.m- 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. and is located at 756 Courthouse Dr. in Charlotte, Michigan. Note that the Animal Shelter only takes cash or checks but the Treasurer's Office will take cards as well. Licenses purchased after the regular due dates can only be purchased at the Animal Control shelter, the Treasurer's Office, and at the Delta Township Office.

 2017 Dog Licensing and Renewal
Dog License Website New and renewal dog licensing for 2017 began December 1. Any dog four months or older needs a new or renewed license.  For non-spayed or neutered dogs the fee is $15. For spayed and neutered dogs the fee is $10. Avoid a $30 delinquent fee by renewing your dog license now.  Pet owners can renew or get new licenses from the convenience of their homes by going to the county treasurer’s dog license website.  All revenue taken in from dog licenses supports Eaton County Animal Control.  Licensing protects public health and welfare and helps assure the safety of your pet. Although a license is still required, there is no fee for leader dogs or dogs in service training.  While one can’t transfer a license to another dog, if a dog’s owner changes, the license will transfer with the dog to its new owner. Licenses can be purchased at:
  • The treasurer’s online dog license website.
  • At the Eaton County Animal Control at 756 Courthouse Drive in Charlotte from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily
  • At the county treasurer’s office in Charlotte 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • At your local township, city, or village office until March 1.
