Eaton Sheriff’s Office on Cutting Edge of Mobile Computing
Sheriff Mike Raines is pleased to announce that Eaton County has undertaken an ambitious project to rein in the cost of in-car computer systems, while also moving forward with new technologies that are available.
Instead of a $6000 laptop, assigned to one vehicle, a tablet PC capable of running the mobile computing software is now being issued to each individual Deputy. While there have been tablets available for several years for mobile applications, they have all been based on the ruggedized versions. With the technology changing so rapidly in mobile computing applications, it becomes a challenge to keep up with those changes while funding sources dwindle.
The tablets that are being issued have the same Windows based operating system, as used by the larger, more expensive laptops. All the functionality is still in place including GPS tracking of patrol units, and mobile reporting software. Being able to complete both crash and incident reports from the field saves both time and fuel.
The cost of the tablets is $640 per unit, and the one- time cost of the mounting system for the patrol car is approximately $700. A patrol vehicle normally shared by 3 Deputies, places it in service for 36 hours in a 48 hour period. Under the laptop approach, this equates to $1666 per Deputy for that terminal. By switching to the tablet, the same cost for those three Deputies drops to $873.
The bottom line is that by using the available technologies, the cost of mobile computing is dropping dramatically. The cost savings is attracting a lot of attention from other mobile computing public safety agencies. Sheriff Raines commended Sgt. Aaron Brown for his foresight and hard work on this project. He also wants to thank 911 Director Steve Leese for funding the project.
