Judge John D. Maurer was appointed by Governor Rick Snyder on May 2, 2016 and took office on May 9, 2016.
The Circuit Court has jurisdiction over criminal felony cases and civil matters where one party is seeking money damages over $25,000. The Circuit Court also hears appeals from the District and Probate Courts, as well as appeals of decisions from local and state administrative agencies. The Family Court Division of the Circuit Court hears all matters regarding divorce, custody and support.
Programs & Specialty Courts
In addition to his standard caseload, Judge Maurer presides over two problem-solving courts. The Eaton County Sobriety Court is a five phase, high intensity alcohol treatment court that works to rehabilitate repeat alcohol-related offenders. Eaton County's Sobriety Court was one of the first in the nation and has proven to be highly effective as a treatment program.
Judge Maurer also presides over the Swift and Sure Sanction Probation Program that places repeat felons on a strict compliance, highly supervised probation. This program works to rehabilitate habitual offenders and introduce them back into society as productive members.
Prior to taking the Bench, Judge Maurer had a distinguished career in private practice for over 25 years, the majority of which was as a partner in the Grand Ledge law firm of Deming & Maurer PLLC
. He has appeared in numerous state and federal courts throughout Michigan, handling a wide variety of legal matters, including criminal, civil, probate and domestic.
In addition, Judge Maurer previously served as a special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Michigan, as well as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney.

- Served as President of the Grand Ledge Chamber of Commerce

- Served on the Board of Directors of a local credit union for over 20 years
