Overall the Eaton County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to 593 calls for service.  Our higher call volumes occurred n the following areas:  Traffic Stops-72, Assist Citizen/Motorist Assist-43, Suspicious Situation/Subject/Vehicle-35, Property Damage Crashes-32, Alarms-26, Domestic Disputes-23, Check Well Beings-20, Traffic Violations-20, Shoplifting Complaints-17, Car in the Ditch-16, Car/Deer Accidents-15, Personal Injury Crashes-14, Traffic Hazards-14, Disorderly Person or Subject-11, Larcenies-10, Vacation Checks-7.

Vacation Checks – If you haven’t heard of this service, it is quite popular with many of our snowbirds.  There is a simple form that is completed over the phone where you would give your address, contact information, who you would like notified in case of an emergency, any vehicles being left on the premises, special lighting on timers, and any information on people you might have checking on your home while you’re gone.  An Eaton County Sheriff’s Deputy is then assigned to   periodically check your home until your return.  This is a free service, and if you are leaving for an extended length of time or maybe a family vacation, the number to call to sign up is 517-543-5247.

Safer Drivers, Safer Roads - As winter comes into full swing, road conditions can change as fast as the weather in Michigan.   Practicing defensive driving can be watching for deer who choose the wrong time to run across the road, watching for drivers distracted by their cell phones and passengers in their car, to being alert to oncoming traffic, to driving on dry pavement one moment and suddenly discovering that what looked like a wet spot in the road while you were approaching it turned out to be a patch of ice.

Defensive driving courses are available online through the National Safety Council and offer specialized courses that focus on teen and young adult drivers, truck and van drivers, etc.

Let’s add safer driving to the list of resolutions you made for 2021.  Together we share the road; let’s share it safely.

Yours in Public Safety

Sheriff Tom Reich
