Take Steps to Protect Your Identity -

On average, someone’s identity is stolen every three seconds. Identity theft can happen to anyone, anywhere and at any time.

Identity theft occurs when someone uses your identifying information such as name, date of birth, social security number or credit card number to obtain goods, services, credit or open fraudulent bank accounts.

To lessen your chances of becoming a victim of identity theft, consider these tips:

  • Never give out identifying information in response to unsolicited offers by phone, mail, internet or in-person.
  • Do not call telephone numbers provided in emails that ask you to “call to verify” personal information.
  • Review financial and credit card statements monthly for unauthorized charges.
  • Install anti-virus and anti-spyware software on your computer, keep it up-to-date and run a weekly scan.
  • Cross-shred documents (i.e., receipts, insurance forms, bank and credit card statements) containing personal identifiers before discarding.
  • Be suspicious of emails that ask you to click a link to claim a prize or ask for immediate action.
  • Never leave your purse and/or wallet unattended. Additionally, limit the number of credit cards you carry and never carry your social security card.
  • When using the internet to make purchases, look for the “s” in the address (https) to ensure it is a secure site.

You are entitled to one free credit disclosure in a 12-month period. To request this free credit report, visit Central Source at www.annualcreditreport.com, or call 877-322-8228.
