DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER –

With the Labor Day holiday approaching, the late summer can be a deadly time on the roadways.  As family and friends travel to celebrate the holiday, there will be increased traffic and, unfortunately, too many impaired drivers putting everyone at risk.  It’s imperative that drivers make smart decisions and plan ahead to ensure a safe way home.  Be responsible – This Labor Day holiday, and every day, make it a point to drive sober.   The enforcement period is August 12-September 5.

During the Labor Day holiday period, we typically see an increase in drunk-driving deaths — and that's why you'll likely see more law enforcement on the roads as part of Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

In Michigan:

  • In 2021, in all traffic crashes occurring over the Labor Day holiday period, 11 people died.
  • Nearly 45 percent of fatalities on Michigan roadways in 2021 involved alcohol and/or drugs.
  • From 2017 to 2021, there were 39 drivers killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes in Michigan during the Labor Day holiday periods. One-third of those killed were alcohol-impaired.
  • Throughout 2021, there were 9,557 alcohol-involved crashes in Michigan with 357 alcohol-involved fatalities. Also last year, there were 2,999 drug-involved crashes in Michigan with 275 drug-involved fatalities.
  • One person was killed in an alcohol-involved crash every 24 hours and 32 minutes in 2021.

Have a Plan Whether You're Driving, Riding or Hosting:

  • Before drinking, plan a safe and sober ride home.
  • Don’t let someone get behind the wheel if they've been drinking.
  • If you’re hosting a gathering, make sure all your guests have a sober ride home.
  • If you see an impaired driver, call 911. And always wear your seat belt — it’s your best defense against impaired drivers.

 Yours in Public Safety

 Sheriff Tom Reich
